My fellow coffee lovers, I'm sitting here remembering the days where I would have two double shot lattes, while out for break with friends and then two hours later I would be looking for the couch needing a midday nap. I'm sure you've experienced this before, if you're an avid coffee fan like myself, but most people don't realise what this energy slump is all about.
When we consume our caffeinated coffee, the caffeine induces a stress response and a cortisol rise, which in turn provides our body with increased energy. Unfortunately, we are already exposed to high levels of increasing stress in our lives, from rushing to work, getting the kids ready for school, over-working ourselves, studying long hours, exerting ourselves at the gym and overthinking.
As you can see, adding caffeine to the mix is just setting ourselves up for an emotional and energetic rollercoaster and we become reliant on it for an energy boost. Doesn't sound ideal huh? Not to mention, the acidity in coffee can cause heartburn and other gastrointestinal dysfunction, that many suffer from today.
So, what's the alternative?, I hear you say. Don't get me wrong, I do occasionally opt for a full strength caffeinated coffee and enjoy every single mouthful, but I am fully aware of the impact that it will have on my hormonal system and I know how I will feel afterwards. BUT...since I've been introduced to the Swiss Water process decaf coffee, it's been a lot easier to ditch the caffeine and support my hormones and energy.
